Everyone knows how bad Trump is, even the Republicans. Think back to how he was excoriated by Repubs back in 2015 and 2016: a liar, a fraud, a con, a carnival barker. They knew it then and they know it even more now. But they almost universally condone everything he does, or even applaud it. Why? Largely because they are afraid, they are afraid of the base and losing their seat.
Democrats are doing little that is effective against this full frontal assault on our democracy and our security. Oh yeah, they have hearings going on and they are sending out subpoenas and they are being completely ignored. Do you think the Trump admin will even submit to a court order to say turn over his tax returns? How would a court enforce that? We even have Trump now calling people (Comey, McCabe, Strzok) traitors who should get the death penalty! The man is the most corrupt, ignorant, and vile creature in the country, and he keeps getting away with it and is just getting more and more brazen and more dangerous by the day.
And why are the Dems doing this? Fear. They won’t stand for our nation because they fear a political backlash. If they cannot make the case against this man now, then we do not deserve to be in power anyway. Sure there is some political risk, but there is more risk in not doing what is obviously necessary and justified. One thing that we should be learning from Trump is the power of boldness and audacity. Just do it!
There is great risk and looking frightened and scared. Stand up strong and make your case. Paul Rosenberg in Rawstory has a good commentary on this and how make it work: Full throttle to toward impeachment Here is a good excerpt:
Over the weekend, congressional scholar Norm Ornstein tweeted that Democrats should ditch all that and flood the zone in their own way, with dramatically presented facts:
Memo to House Democrats: start now with a truly aggressive and multifaceted presentation of the findings in the Mueller Report … going with giant placards with the excerpts that show the evidence of obstruction and collusion (collusion is not conspiracy!) … You are trying to show impeachable offenses. Hold aggressive hearings with @benjaminwittes and some of the 900 prosecutors who signed the letter — let them lay out the evidence in stark terms. Then move to formal impeachment inquiry. Lay the right groundwork NOW.
The combination of former White House counsel Don McGahn’s refusal to appear before a House Judiciary Committee hearing and the tweetstorm by Rep. Justin Amash, the first Republican member of Congress to argue for Trump’s impeachment, has changed things. There has been a significant jump in the number of House Democrats openly calling for impeachment, with increased pressure inside Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s leadership team. But the terms of debate on the Democratic side remain profoundly muddled, in stark contrast to the clarity Ornstein is calling for.
It is time, past time, for Democrats to start full blown strong impeachment proceedings and hearings. Get the right witnesses, make your case, and it will be abundantly clear to enough Americans that he needs to go. If and when Senate Republicans fail to convict, hang that around their necks. Stop being cowards.
