Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
Note: Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? Contact brillig.

I had a chance to beta test something interesting today — an online platform to allow registrants of an upcoming large event to get to know one another a little bit prior to the actual event itself. There were maybe forty of us, a mix of repeat and first-time attendees. The general idea was to allow us to make a few connections, so that when we all show up at a large convention center, there will be a familiar face or two, and possibly some contacts made over social media as well. It reminded me of what the combination of “Group Icebreaker Activities At First Meetings Of Newly Formed Groups” + “Speed Dating” + “Let’s Get All The Kids Starting Kindergarten Together Sometime In August For A Social Time” would look like.
Grab a beverage and hop below the Story Break and hear a bit about my Icebreaker hour, and do some of our own!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
The platform put 40 or so of us into a group chat space for a few minutes of general introductions, and then we were randomly placed in a one-to-one video chat with another participant for five minutes. We could either chat on our own, or use a set of Icebreaker Questions that we clicked on to give us a conversational focus. After five minutes, we said goodbye and were returned to the group text chat space. We did this five or six times, each with a different participant. Each round had a different set of Icebreaker questions based on a particular topic. It was a really good experience and except for twice getting people I already knew (and giving feedback that first-timers should be paired with repeat attendees based on initial questionnaire answers) I got to make a connection with four new people that I am eager to see when I attend this event.
I didn’t write down any of the question prompts we were given, but remembered a few then did a quick search of “Icebreaker Questions”, and have provided a few below. I hope that folks will take the opportunity to answer one or more, or even pose some of their own. I studiously tried to avoid anything looking suspiciously like an Identity Theft question!
What’s the next item on your bucket list? (this actually was a question from today!)
What’s one item always in your refrigerator?
What is your superpower? (Either a real one or an imaginary one)
Who is the person you most admire?
You walk into a room with seats on both sides of a center aisle. Which side do you sit on and why?
If you were a season, which would you be and why?
What boosts your spirits when you need to recharge?
What activities do you do to relax?
Tell me about your hometown...
Who’s your favorite activist? (the other question from today I remember)
What first brought you to Daily Kos?
What’s your favorite Community Diary series? (besides Top Comments, of course! :))
Please have fun in the comments getting to know one another, after you peruse the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures that provide our framework for conversation every night! Thanks to BeninSC for bringing our Tops, and for being one of the most interesting people I know!
