The 28th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America:
“The second article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.”
That’s it. It’s a terrible amendment. No more nitpicking about its meaning, reason, or modern-day relevancy. Cut to the chase and repeal it. It’s really not that scary and is the only way to regulate guns going forward.
Repealing the 2nd wouldn’t ban one gun. All it would do is take cover away Republicans and force a meaningful discussion of where we want to be as a nation regarding guns without the anvil of the 2nd strung around our necks. Congress would actually have to create legislation from scratch, a process that could start during the years-long repeal process. How would that look and sound? I’m fascinated to know.
Someone of note at least needs dare mention it’s name. Overton and all that.
Imagine if both parties had to identify a gun platform that actually meant something? How would that look? I doubt the Democratic platform would be to ban all guns. The fun would be in watching Republicans figure out theirs.
At the federal level the big-ticket items could be addressed and voters could react accordingly. Polls are greatly in the Democrats’ favor on that one. At the state level the blues could go a little further, the purple and reds could hide behind the fed’s laws and let it ride. And 80+% of us would be more than a little relieved, even if we all don’t say it out loud.
One thing Republicans do really well is attack strengths. Turn that back on them. I strongly believe we should repeal and not replace the 2nd amendment. And start over.
