Letting Religious Types Vote Dem

Mon May 24, 2004 at 07:34:13 AM PDT

Hello all.  This is my first diary, so please go easy on me ;-)

I posted this link:

http://www.faithfulamerica.org

a while back on an open thread, and got a little bit of a storm off it.  The idea was that some religious (ok - Christian) folk think that the Repubs are somehow the 'default' party for them as 'believers' - I thought it might be nice to point such people towards a leftist religious site such as the one above.

However, there was some disagreement.  Some suggested that discussing politics in a religious context should never be condoned/encouraged in this way.  I think that's an unhelpful stance - I myself am athiest, but if I was religious, I would always factor that into my voting choices, as it would be the basis of my moral system!  So I figure you have to work with that - if people think within a framework of their faith, so be it.

There may be seperation of Church & State on an instituational level, but not at the level of the individual in the ballot box.  That's just life - you can't force people to disregard their religious views when thinking about politics!  That's why I think sites like this can be helpful.

Of course, the name makes it sound like they're on some conversion mission to join Church & State together - but (mea culpa) the guy who runs it is an old friend of mine, and I know that's not the intention.

Thoughts?
