Edwards commits news in Lewiston, Maine?

I just got back from a town hall meeting with John Edwards in Lewiston, ME. It was great fun and the crowd was pumped. Former Maine Governor, Angus King (I) was there and he heartily endorsed KE04. He had voted for Bush in 2000 but he said that he had to speak out against Bush because he "couldn't take it anymore."
During the Q&A time from a girl 12-14 years asked Edwards what the campaigns position was on the draft. Edwards answered emphatically, "There will be no draft in a Kerry Edwards administration." He went on to lay out the campaign's plan to boost the size of the active duty military.
However, as far as I know, an emphatic refusal to ever use the draft is a new position from the campaign. And, I think that it is one with a potential to be pivotal.
Although it is likely to play well with the so called "Security Moms" now, it seems like a position that could turn out to be like GHW Bush's "Read my lips, no new taxes" in 2008.
I think it is a bold statement in today's security environment.
For example, it is entirely possible that North Korea could launch a nuclear attack on South Korea and Japan. Although the US would destroy North Korea with a retaliatory strike, the burden of reconstructing Japan and the Korean peninsula would fall to the US. Given the likelihood for civil unrest amongst the survivors (starvation, looting, riots) and the fear people would have of entering an area contaminated with nuclear fallout, a draft would likely be the only way the US could mobilize a force large enough to deal with the problem.
Unfortunately, I can also see Bush using this position to try to make KE04 look weak on defense.
What do you think?
