How It's Done

Point values are assigned to each comment's ratings: 2 for Excellent, 1 for Good, 0 for Marginal, -2 for Unproductive, and -3 for Troll. These values are added, then the comments ranked.

Comments must have at least 7 ratings to qualify.

Also, to qualify for today's list, comments must be attached to a diary or main page story posted on October 12, Eastern time.

"Tip jar" comments are excluded, since well-received diaries are recognized through the Recommended Diaries mechanism.

To do this, all comments diarists make to their own diaries are excluded. This may exclude other well-rated comments diarists make to their own diaries. But then, diarists can edit their diaries to include the content of their well-received comments, then hope for recognition in the Recommended Diaries.

Finally, I excluded Cheers and Jeers, because that thing is just an insane mojo rave.
