Technique:

Get your picture and posterize it using minimal bits. I just used photo editor, nothing fancy. This limits the colors so you can easily pick out the main dark/light areas.

Print the picture, trim and stick it to your pumpkin using stick pins.

Using another stickpin, needle, whatever, make pinpricks all around the outline. This takes forever.

Take the picture off the pumpkin. Use a penknife to trace along the pinpricks and bruise the pumpkin slightly so the pricks become visible lines.

Use the penknife to cut the pumpkin skin on the outline and then peel it off. Once that is done, it is easy to trim away the flesh without slipping and cutting your picture.

This was the first pumpkin I've done this way and it took me a couple hours.
