Last November, by a margin of only two votes, the Senate turned back a measure that would have provided billions in subsidies for expanded oil and gas drilling and loan guarantees to build nuclear power plants, plus dozens of smaller special interest provisions to benefit the contributors to specific individual members of Congress.
Now, with public concern over the deficit mounting, these special interests have decided to try to attach this damaging legislation to the popular transportation funding proposal in the hopes that it can simply ride along without the same level of opposition.
The United States needs a new energy policy - one that focuses on energy efficiency, tough mileage standards for trucks and cars, and renewable sources of supply - but this energy bill goes in the wrong direction and deserves to be blocked.
