Updated- hot link to MP3 in comments This morning I heard this song on radio that I had not heard before and it moved me to tears. I searched for it here on daliykos and I did not find in diaries or in dskospedia. I'm hoping that one of you with more posting skill can post a hotlink to the song in the event that my link below isn't formatted properly. Apparently the song is getting some airplay in Los Angeles and now Portland. In my view it is a song that explores issues that have been discussed extensively on this site and would be of interest to the dailykos community. If you agree, please reccomend the diary so others will hear it too. I hope you enjoy it and find it worth listening to. This is my first diary and I know it is on the short side. The lyrics are in the extended section. www.brettdennen.com/media.html
"The Holidays Are Here (and We're Still at War)" By Brett Dennen BMI/Three Angels & A Saint 2005 Pilgrims in the parking lot / Arteries clogged with blood clots Pushing through the aisles of the department store Neon crosses and Christmas lights / Credit card debts and brand new bikes The holidays are here and we're still at war The rabbi reads from the testament / The banker gazes at the year's investments Salvation santa's solicit for the poor / The deception of democracy The philanderings of faux foreign policy The holidays are her and we're still at war Smoggy skies and fixed elections / Injustice strikes from all directions People with their backs against the floor / Looking for someone to set us free A king with fists like Mohammad Ali The holidays are here and we're still at war Your mother knows what is best for you / Even though it's hard to listen Your father knows he can count on you / Even though you couldn't count on him Christopher Columbus knew / Vasco De Gama and Magellan too The profits of oppression grow like never before / All Hail to the capitalist thief Mourn your lost ones and covet our grief The holidays are here and we're still at war Hurricane waters ravage southern towns / Black and white people left to drown While the white house and the emergency management agency ignores Victims take shelter in the Astrodome / The National Guard says "don't go home" The holidays are here and we're still at war Police officers hassle the homeless / Domestic disputes and alcohol violence The jail house opens wide its door / A corporation cuts a million employees The factory moves overseas The holidays are here and we're still at war Our mother knows what is best for you / Even though it's hard to listen Your father knows he can count on your / Even through you couldn't count on him Jesus sheds another tear / Into a sea of two thousand years Into the eve of a new year once more / Tears of joy and resolutions of sorrow Toast to health and wealth tomorrow The holidays are here and we're still at war Religious wars and domination / World trade and globalization The prices of petroleum soar / Lonesome churches packed with sinners, Non believers and new beginners The holidays are here and we're still at war Say a prayer for the less fortunate / Prisoners, soldiers you've never met Understand what it is they are fighting for / Say a prayer for your enemies A prayer for the victims and their families The holidays are here and we're still at war
