Gannon Monday Media Roundup [today's Daily Variety]

Mon Feb 28, 2005 at 03:57:56 AM PDT

(I know it should be Monday Media Melee)
"First they ignored us, then they laughed at us, then they tried to fight us, then we won."

First, they IGNORED the JG story.
Now, they are LAUGHING at the JG story.
Next, they will try to SPIN the JG story.
Finally, we win?

I wanted people to be able to see the Variety Daily (Reed Elsevier Group PLC) article (which isn't on the web), so I apologize if this is a link-to-other-news diary. They kind of went low-brow with it, but what do you expect?

What I hope you get out of this is that the Guckert story has some lasting power and has become watercooler talk.  After the Daily Variety article, don't miss Anne Coulter's latest foot-in-mouth ala JG.

Text of today's Variety Daily article which suggests that Mr. Guckert should go ply his trade (didn't mean any pun) in Hollywood.

D.C. to Hollywood

Since Jeff Gannon, or James D. Guckert as he is really named, seems washed up at the White House, surely there can be a role for him at a talent agency. A key attribute of agenting is the ability to create instant access and credibility, and Guckert clearly shows promise.

Though devoid of legitimate credentials, he sold himself to the FBI and gained admission to all White House press conferences. The Bush administration came to favor him as a dependable outlet for exclusive stories. Indeed, he was often recognized at news conferences ahead of reps from the major media organizations.

Sure, Guckert was a risk taker, but that didn't seem to hurt his access. According to the Washington Post, he created porn Web sites, offering himself as a gay escort. He even ran explicit photos of himself online. Since the Bushies seemed oblivious to all this, surely prospective clients in Hollywood would be equally unfazed.

After all, what Jeff Gannon (a good Hollywood name) has going for him is aggressiveness and a limitless appetite for self-invention. If he's willing to clean up his politics, and his Web site, he could go far in show business.

----------

In a February 23 column, Anne Coulter remarked:

Guckert/Gannon was a better reporter than The New York Times' Maureen Dowd and his "only offense is that he may be gay."
...
"Press passes can't be that hard to come by if the White House allows that old Arab Helen Thomas to sit within yards of the president."

My opinion is that Dems should sink to her level hit the airwaves pointing out that "Press passes can't be that hard to come by if fake journalist, from partisan fake newsites, and a hustler background can sit within yards of the president.

----------

Finally, yet another upcoming Gannon interview with Roll Call (for those with memberships) has been announced. :

[Gannon] has given yet another interview, this time to the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call's Mary Ann Akers

Didn't his laywers tell him to shut up?  Didn't he say he was afraid for his life?  Wasn't the light of scrutiny initially too much for him to bear?  Why now is he trying to become the next Monica??!!  Maybe Variety Daily is on to something.

-----------

Ok, so the truth about Guckert isn't quite getting out there.  Fear not! There is a LOT to this story which has yet to be discovered. Like Ghandi, this is too interesting to be ignored!
