EUREKA -- Ralph Nader will not replace Eureka resident David Cobb as the Green Party's presidential candidate on the California ballot after all.
The Green Party of California Tuesday night announced its state coordinating committee voted not to convene a special meeting to consider replacing Cobb with Nader. The proposal to hold the special assembly lost by a 11-7 vote, with 2 abstentions.
More than 3/4 of the Green Delegation to the National Convention in Milwaukee were supporters of Nader's VP pick Peter Camejo, and so voted for Nader. There had been a great deal of talk about the CA state coordinating committee attempting to put Nader/Camejo on the Green ballot in CA instead of national Green candidate David Cobb, but cooler heads have prevailed, and Cobb will be on the ballot.
This all but prevents Nader from getting on the ballot in the most populous state in the country. We should also know this week about New York, where petitioners for both candidates have been trying to get the 15,000 valid signatures necessary. New York's delegation was also pro-Nader, but many of the state's party leaders, who voted for Nader at the convention, are trying to get Cobb on the ballot, as well as long-time anti-war activist and former Socialist Party Presidential candidate David McReynolds on the ballot for Senate to oppose Chuck 'I love war and occupation' Schumer.
