Georgia Governor to my mother: You can't vote.

Sat Apr 23, 2005 at 11:24:26 AM PDT

My mother is 90 years old and under hospice care, so it's a moot point, but still. Under a new law signed into law by Governor Sonny Perdue on Friday, Georgia voters must present one of the following forms of picture ID in order to vote:

  • Driver's license
  • Passport
  • State-issued photo ID (includes public school and public university IDs)
  • Military photo ID
  • Tribal photo ID

My mother, believe it or not, has never had a driver's license or a passport. If she has any form of photo ID, I'm not aware of it. She has always lived in a very small town where poll workers knew who she was. Now, assuming she were physically and mentally able to vote, she would have to get some sort of state-issued photo ID. This is simply absurd.

More Georgia news below the fold...

Governor Perdue also signed into law on Friday new child support guidelines that require judges to consider the incomes of both parents when setting child support payments. So apparently the Republicans are trying to lessen the burden on deadbeat dads!

But hey, it's not all bad news in Georgia! Perdue also signed into law

  • a resolution designating each April 29 as "Dale Earnhardt Day,"
  • a bill allowing farmers to use part of their crop land for cell phone towers or tourist corn mazes (WTF?) without endangering a tax waiver for leaving the land fallow.

And last week the Georgia Board of Regents approved an 8% tuition increase for Georgia's three research universities and a 5% tuition for Georgia's regional and state universities.

Oy, oy, oy.
