Frist Filibuster continues at Princeton

Thu Apr 28, 2005 at 09:48:42 AM PDT

You may have heard about the 'filibuster' going on in front of Princeton University's Frist Student Center (yes, THAT Frist).  A group of a dozen or so students decided a few days ago that, to protest Bill Frist's efforts to eliminate the filibuster, they were going to hold their own filibuster... in front of the very building Frist's family paid for!

They started their filibuster Tuesday morning around 11am.  The original plan was to do 24 hours total in two 12-hour shifts (starting again Wednesday morning at 11am).  They decided that wasn't good enough, and have instead NOT STOPPED SINCE TUESDAY MORNING.  That means they have been going for over 48 hours now, non-stop.

Read on for more details...

They are reading anything they can get their hands on: The Constitution, My Pet Goat, the Declaration of Independence, the phone book, Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends...

With the use of an iBook, a webcam, a wireless internet connection, and a lot of borrowed iBook batteries, the students have set up a webcam that is streaming video (no audio) of the filibuster.  That webcam is available here, but since it's being run on a dinky little laptop, it can't handle much traffic.

Josh Marshall, of Talking Points Memo is a Princeton alumnus and has been following the filibuster:

The Frist filibuster was mentioned in CNN's Morning Grind on Wednesday, and it's even appearing in my school paper today, all the way here in Illinois! The Princeton Progressive Review has also been following the events closely.

The students have time slots filled in to continue the filibuster through tomorrow, as well as a permit to be there.  It seems they're going to keep this going as long as possible.

If you're in the area, stop by the Frist Student Center to show your support, or even to sign up for some filibustering of your own!
