Portland Opts Out of FBI Task Force

Thu Apr 28, 2005 at 09:59:01 PM PDT

Tonight, by a vote of 4 to 1, the Portland, Oregon city council decided to opt out of the FBI Joint Task Force.  This may not be big news to too many people, but it's gonna raise holy hell here.
Portland's new Mayor Tom Potter has been adamant about having top level clearance to task force information.  The FBI said "no way," thereby setting up the showdown.  Tom didn't blink.  His contention is that police/military activities should always have civilian oversite. (Keep in mind that he was previously the Chief of Police here in Portland.)

My sister and brother-in-law were at the meeting and came away absolutely exhilerated by the exchange.  Most there were in support of opting out.  Only one city counselor voted against the opt out and, according to my sister, he was all but shouted down.  (Not saying that's a great thing.  Just sayin'.)

Apparently the arguments in favor of opting out were well-reasoned and sound.  (I'm sorry I don't have any links, but I can't find any up yet.)

So, "Little Beirut" hangs onto it's unruly rep.  And those of us who have supported Mayor Tom (another Dean Democrat, for those who care) come away amazed. And in my case, very proud.
