Republicans view the troops as just another expendable weapon!

Wed Jun 29, 2005 at 03:06:42 PM PDT

I am so sick and fucking tired of hearing that Republicans are the party that supports the troops that I could fucking vomit! These bloviating bastards can kiss my ass on the Capitol steps. I just witnessed the latest in a long line of travesties perpetrated against our brave men and women in uniform by Republicans on the floor of the United States Senate and I'm fucking furious.

more below the fold

Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) proposed an amendment concerning a law which was proposed by the White House about a year and a half ago restricting travel to Cuba to once every three years. Sen. Dorgan prefaced the presentation of his amendment with the story of a young man who escaped Cuba in a raft, came to this country, and despite not being able to get his wife and children out of Cuba, enlisted in the United States National Guard. This young man was subsequently deployed to Iraq where he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and served his new country with honor and distinction. Sen. Dorgan then related that this young man had come to see him because his young son in Cuba is gravely ill and, although he had wanted to visit his son, the government has denied his request to do so. Sen. Dorgan's amendment does not attempt to remove the ban on travel to Cuba but, rather, provides a "hardship clause" in said travel restriction wherein an individual may apply to undertake additional travel to Cuba when a family hardship (i.e.-the death or illness of a family member) occurs. Upon hearing this, 2 Republican Senators (whose names escape me) stood up and spoke about what a horrible regime the Castro government is (they support terrorists, have abysmal human rights, etc.) He just wants to see his sick kid and I would petition both of these pontificating bastards to think about what their life would be like if they were only allowed to see their children once every three years. No one (least of all me) would argue that the Castro regime is a shining star in the world of global politics but, this highly decorated soldier deserves better from his government. As do ALL of our men and women in uniform.

As a veteran, the travesties perpetrated against our troops by the Republican side of the aisle over the past 6 years piss me off to no end! The way our troops have been treated by the administration and their cronies in Congress, while at the same time they exploit the troops for political gain at every opportunity, sickens me! It is implicitly clear to me that they don't support the troops...they view the troops as simply another expendable weapons system. From the beginning of the BushCo administration, they have done everything in their power to make life harder for our men and women in uniform and those, like myself, who have worn the uniform in the past. Sending our young men and women into harms way simply to make political hay and establish a "war president" (By the way, how's that working out for you George?) was unconscionable in its own right. To do so and, at the same time, not provide them with ALL the equipment they need to keep them safe, efficient, and productive borders on treasonous. These sanctimonious bastards should all have to march a patrol in Mosul or Tikrit and eat spoiled food provided by KBR while watching the KBR Management eat all the good food from their stores. They should be forced to live on E-4 pay as a National Guardsman and have to worry about their children not having health insurance while they're risking their lives in the desert 10,000 miles away. I'm so sick of hearing "Rah, Rah, Rah, Support the troops by going shopping!" from this administration and its cronies while they try to cut ALL of our funding and the programs needed to support us that I'm ready to punch someone (preferably a Republican Congressman or Senator) in the teeth!
