Am I the only person who noticed how awful Friedman was today?

So, I'm reading the NYT op-ed (2005-07-08) after it dried out from the rain, and there is Friedman's column, talking about how Muslims need to be involved in solving terrorism by Muslims. Nothing unusual, for Friedman.
And then "to this day - no major Muslim cleric or religious body has ever issued a fatwa condemning Osama bin Laden".
From the context (Salman Rushdie in the preceding sentence), "fatwa" would mean death sentence, though according to Wikipedia that is not the usual case. I don't know what Friedman's game is here -- if he is asking "why no religious death sentence for OBL?", then he is being incredibly insulting, because we normally think of these death-sentence-fatwas as coming from religious extremists, often unfriendly to America, and such fatwas are themselves a form of terrorism. He's asking our friends, in effect, why they aren't acting like those other crazy Muslims. And he knows that most people will read it that way, too (I did, at first), so he's either stupid and insulting, or deliberately inciting anti-Muslim sentiment.
Someone should just get that man his own show on Fox, and get him off the op-ed page of the NYT.
