Clark / Edwards 2008: A Sure Ticket!

Thu Sep 29, 2005 at 07:14:59 AM PDT

Yes, I know: It's way too early to talk about the Democratic nomination for 2008. But in light of recent happenings in our country, we Dems will be well served to start planning to win elections early. The Republicans have been doing it for decades now, apparently with much success.

Clearly, Katrina has blown the cover off the disease of poverty that has been afflicting our country. Poverty has been well hideden from most Americans, and from the rest of the world, because the Republicans want it that way. Under Bush, poverty has steadily increased, and W. could care less about it. After all, his "base" have yachts and million-dollar homes to buy.

This brings up the issue of John Edwards. Edwards has been emphasizing poverty throughout his campaign, and there is no denying that his political stock has been rising tremendously since Katrina exposed American poverty. He has been right all along: There are two Americas! The "better half" has finally gotten the opportunity to see the "other half."

Edwrds high profile will rise even higher come 2008, when poverty and Katrina will be thrust into national politics once again. Below is a snippet from The Boston Globe:

Edwards got it right about poverty

IN ANY COLLECTION of Americans who have earned the right to say I told you so, John Edwards should make every short list.
...

Edwards was right in saying at the Center for American Progress that Katrina not only exposed America's dirty secret but presented a ''historic moment" when it is clear the country is ready to support action but is short on the leadership that can prompt it.

''Nobody who works full-time should have to raise children in poverty or in fear that one health emergency or pink slip will drive them over the cliff," said Edwards.

Instead of Newt Gingrich's Conservative Opportunity Society or President Bush's even more narrow-minded Ownership Society, Edwards's conceptual framework surrounds the country most of us know every day: a Working Society. Bill Clinton famously aimed his 1992 presidential campaign at the Americans willing to ''work hard and play by the rules," and in the 1990s there was finally some progress in what have to be the twin objectives of national policy -- promoting vigorous economic growth and making long-delayed progress against poverty.

Those objectives have suffered in the first half of this decade, and Edwards is pushing for a revival.

IMHO, Clark remains the most potent, polished Dem to take on whomever the Republicans choose to field in '08. If he is paired with Edwards, Clark could represent the Dems most realistic chance at winning back the White House. If my hunch is right, we should already be able to take over congree in '06.

At the risk of sounding like I am trying to politicize Katrina, why not take advantage of it to make our country better? Poverty is a Dem issue, and Edwards is at the forefront of it right now.

Clark/Edwards in 2008 will be our winning ticket!
