Why I'm Staying up all night

Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 10:35:14 PM PDT

I have been waiting since 1996 to have something to cheer about on election night, and goddamn it, I'm staying up all night if necessary to see if we take the Senate!  Why is this so important to me?  See below the fold.
I remember an election night party in D.C. in 1980 - I was not yet working for the House, but I worked at the time for the Federal government.  That night, when the Dems lost the Senate, for the first time in about 30 years, 80% of the people in the room lost their jobs.  Talk about sucking the air out of a room.

I also remember when we lost the House in 1994 - I was no longer in DC, but many of my friends still working there lost their jobs that night, which began 12 fucking years of disastrous policy for this country.

So by God, I'm staying up and opening some champagne to drink all by myself if Webb holds on and that Fairfax vote is really yet to come in (I think that will take him over the edge).  It may yet be morning in American again, again.  Ya'll stick with here, OK?
