Some of you may have seen my annoying poll flash by in the Diaries earlier. It asked about Kossacks feelings on the issue of hate crime legislation. It seems (from the very small sampling I got here) that we're pretty evenly split here.
I am a pretty open-minded guy, but I have yet to hear an intelligent argument for hate crime legislation. This seems to me to be the kind of bullshit issue that Republicans usually come up with in order to appeal to the emotions of their base. They may mean well, but it is not rooted in logic.
I currently live in the (red) state where Matthew Shephard was so brutally murdered. In fact, I live about 45 minutes from where it happened. Like many, I was sickened by the heinous nature of the crime. A young life snuffed out for no reason, and in such a malicious, frightening manner. It made me think of another senseless crime that occurred in this state about three weeks earlier. A crime to which no one else in the country paid any attention. A crime that happens all too often around this country.
A little girl was abducted and raped. Her throat was slashed and her lifeless body was dumped in a landfill. A drifter had come upon her as she played near her house, and he took her away forever.
Talk to me.
