CO-Sen: Allard mulls breaking term limit promise

Wed Dec 20, 2006 at 10:05:34 AM PDT

Allard will make his final decision in January.

Allard, a Fort Collins native, will announce next month whether he plans to seek re-election in 2008. He first was elected in 1996 and beat Democrat Tom Strickland for re-election in 2002.

"A lot of personal factors" will go into the call, Allard said after he spoke at the Larimer County Republican Breakfast Club in Fort Collins on Monday morning.

"I'll do some visiting with the family," he said.

Some have speculated Allard will opt against another run, pointing to the slight $122,476 in his campaign war chest. That's a fraction of what other incumbents readying for competitive races have on hand.

Allard made a pledge in 1996 and 2002 to serve just two terms.

U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, D-Eldorado Springs, has been rumored to be looking at a run for Allard's seat and had nearly $1.3 million in his campaign bank account at the end of November.

Rumor? It's no rumor. Udall is in, and whether Allard stays in or not, this will be a top-three race in 2008.
