Thumbs up today for the Catholic Church in Michigan! The Michigan Catholic Conference's Paul Long was among those who
went on record yesterday against legislative Republicans' plans to cut Medicaid health care to the poor (read the full MCC press release
here). This from the AP:
"The easiest thing in the world to do is to slash programs that cover people who don't really have a voice in this legislative body," Long said at Monday's news conference. "The hard thing is to look at other places in the budget or other ways."
Compare that to
this 2004 quote from then-Republican State Chairman Betsy Devos regarding the current Republican Speaker of the House:
"Governor Granholm will try to push through some destructive legislation; there is no doubt about that," continued DeVos. "Craig DeRoche will stand firm to hold the line on spending, prevent the Governor from further hiking taxes and maintain the moral values of this state and nation. We're glad to have him as a member of the Michigan Republican leadership team."(emphasis added)
Moral values? Not according to the Catholic Church.
In a separate and unrelated story, three more
black bear sightings were reported near Lansing yesterday.
