Pope Benedict XVI appeals for immediate cease-fire in Middle East
Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday appealed for an immediate cease-fire in the Middle East.
"In the name of God, I appeal to all those responsible for this spiral of violence, so that they immediately put down their arms on all sides," the pope told faithful at his summer residence on the outskirts of Rome. He stressed the word "immediately."

I want to take a trip back to 2004. Remember the Catholic leaders wanting to ex-communicate Kerry because of his stance on abortion? Are they going to try the same with Catholic members of congress or the Bush administration that don't follow the words of the pope?
We don't have to just discuss the death penalty, and wars of aggression, we could also mention the social gospel, anti-poverty efforts that the pope sanctions. There are a myriad of problems with the Catholic Church, but just like any body there are positive forces that should be embraced by all.
As Pope Benedict XVI calls for peace in the middle east, I hope we at the same time, those of us Catholic or not, demand of Catholic leaders to quit being hypocrites. Abortion, and anti-homosexuality are not the only damned teachings of the church. If you are going to cast the first stone, at least cast it judiciously, or with equality.
It is morally repugnant to bitch about liberal Catholic politicians who don't loathe homosexuals at the same time as "Conservative" Catholics are allowed to ignore church teachings on war, death, disease, poverty and justice. Or maybe I am missing something.
