Brian Mooney of the Boston Globe reports
that the presidential campaign of Cong. Richard A. Gephardt has
picked up some important and key supporters in South Carolina. He
has received the endorsement of veteran state Treasurer Grady L.
Patterson Jr and a reception was held for Gephardt which was
hosted by former governor Robert E. McNair and both of the
state's Democratic congressmen Representatives John M. Spratt Jr.
and James E. Clyburn. The support of Clyburn is especially
important because of his long track record in being able to get
out the state's black vote. Gephardt leads in a number of polls
in Iowa where he has a good chance of coming in first. A good
showing in South Carolina would give Gephardt momentum for
fertile ground in Michigan which comes 4 days later.
