Democrat proposes middle class tax cut!

Thu May 11, 2006 at 09:29:03 AM PDT

We all know that the costs of college tuition have been rising astronomically the past few years.  Kirsten Gillibrand, running against Bush tool John Sweeney in NY-20, wants to do something to  help.

Yesterday, she proposed a program that would allow middle class families to deduct $10,000 per year in college tuition from their income taxes.

Standing outside the entrance to Skidmore College, surrounded by students and parents, Gillibrand criticized the Bush administration for cutting federal tuition assistance. Gillibrand, a Democrat, is seeking to replace U.S. Rep. John Sweeney, R-Clifton Park, in the 20th Congressional District.

"Costs should not be what prevents them from getting a good education," Gillibrand said. "This is a tax cut for middle-class families."

In the rural, economically depressed areas outside of Albany, Kirsten's proposal could go a long way towards helping working families send their kids to college.

Later in the day, the labor and family-oriented Working Families Party endorsed Gillibrand.
