Remember from ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, when Woodward mentions that he's a Republican?
I wonder if he's still acting as a Republican.
His access to the Bush WH over the past few years indicates a level of familiarity with BushCo. that goes beyond what other journalists seem to enjoy.
As documented by Atrios, Woodward went out of his way to tell any one who would listen that the Plame outing was not a crime, not important, no big deal. He belittled Fitzgerald and the investigation.
Why would he do this? Why would an investigatve journalist with a history of exposing executive corruption work hard to prevent investigation of potential executive corrruption?
I couldn't understand it when I saw Woodward on Larry King, saying he didn't think there was any crime or conspiracy.
And now this.
Why come out with this now?
There were rumors that Woodward had information - a "bombshell" - some months ago, but he downplayed it. We're supposed to believe that, just withn the past few days a senior admin official "remembered" a conversation and named Woodward?
It doesn't make sense.
Woodward - is he trying to throw Libby a lifeline? Is he trying to muddy the waters for Fitz and raise questions about the chain of passage of info on Plame?
Either Woodward is a journalist, or he's a partisan hack.
If he was a journalist, it seems to me that, while snooping around the WH, interviewing everyone in the building about the run up to the war, the war intel, how it was gathered and vetted - you would THINK he would've sniffed out SOMETHING about Plame.
That SHOULD have been a HUGE fucking story. "White House Attacks Undercover Wife of War Critic".
With details and dates and info, He had unbelievable access.
But that's not a story Woodward wrote, is it?
That makes me think he's a hack.
And that makes me think this story, this week, the apology, all of it - is a big bullshit smokescreen and lie aimed at weakening Fitz's case in the eyes of the American public.
