The doo-doo might start really hitting the fan soon.
[Iraq]'s most powerful cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, made public today his opposition to a new American plan for indirect elections of an Iraqi government, dealing a possibly fatal blow to the United States initiative to turn power over more quickly to Iraqis.
The Shiites are the largest single ethnic group in Iraq. Strong opposition to the interum government (and by association, the US occupation which put it there) would be disasterous.
I'm not one who hopes Iraq goes badly. I have friends over there, and they get shot at. However, this doesn't seem like a good sign.
I think one of the key memes in raking Team Bush over the coals on the war is how they were played by Ahmad Chalabi, played like a Jordanian bank. He's the one who set up this governing council. He's the one who told Cheny and Wolfie that US troops would get a Parisian welcome in Baghdad.
I don't think the whole "Bush is Evil" line is going to be enough to sink him in the election. Much as I like moveon's MisLeader campaign, I think a different track is needed to break through that high personal approval rating. I think the line is, "the administration is incompetent."
