So the media is now regularly reporting polls in the mid-30s for Bush's approval rate.
Many of us have wondered who are these fools that are sticking by this maniac amidst constant assaults to common sense.
"They're crazy," we sometimes say. Or, "these guys would stick with Bush no matter what he did."
Even better, the low approval ratings are fodder for late night comedians. One from Jay Leno last year had Bush's approval lower than Cheney's pulse rate. (If you have other jokes, do share!)
Opportunity!
Anyway, all of this, I think, presents us with an excellent framing opportunity.
When talking about Bush's low approval ratings, try to use the phrase the bottom third.
This phrase not only highlights how low the ratings actually are, but also puts this loyal following of lunatics well outside the mainstream.
Examples of how to use this might include:
- The question is how long the bottom third is going to stick with Bush.
- The bottom third seems to not be paying attention to the real issue here.
- Maybe the bottom third supports Bush on war with Iran, but I'm not sure anyone else does.
The phrase not only positions Bush's support as extreme, but it also has excellent connotations found in the word "bottom". Think, bottom of the barrel, bottom dollar, bottomless pit, hitting bottom, etc.
Let me know what you think. To me, this seems like a great way to position Bush and his followers.
