Secretary of State Geoff Connor confirmed Friday that he will resign sometime after December 13--after he's done overseeing the state's count of electoral votes in the race for president.
According to the San Antonio Express News, Conner said he told Texas Governor Rick Perry of his plans to leave office last summer but hadn't intended to make an announcement until later.
Connor said he alerted Gov. Rick Perry to his departure plans last summer, but had not intended an announcement until later.
"I love this job," he said. "But you have to leave at some point," Conner told the Associated Press.
Perry will likely appoint North Texas car dealer and Bush/Cheney fund-raiser Roger Williams to the position, though Williams said as late as Friday he hadn't received an actual job offer from the Governor.
Whomever is elected to serve will be Perry's fourth appointee to the post after conner. Two former State Representatives, Gwyn Shea and Henry Cuellar, also served. Shea was a Dallas County Constable prior to her service as a state legislator. Cuellar recently won a seat in the U.S. Congress.
Perry's choice will be subject to Senate confirmation. Conner hasn't been confirmed by the senate because he was appointed to succeed Shea in August 2003--after the regular legislative session.
