The Gannon affair has caused many to ask: Why would gays support a political party that acts against their interests? I propose an answer that I term "Philby Syndrome."
Kim Philby was a notorious British spy who was a double agent for the Soviets. Despite having a privileged upbringing and a successful career, he betrayed his country and his colleagues. Although Philby's motivations are not fully understood, one factor was probably the thrill of having an extraordinary secret and living with the constant danger of exposure.
I suggest that the homosexual Philbys in the Bush administration derive enhanced pleasure from the practice of covert homosexualtiy, and that they know that Republican intolerance of homosexuals keeps them closeted with a furtive sexuality that they find peculiarly gratifying.
In short, far from welcoming an embrace of the Gay community by Conservatives, the Republican Philbys would feel diminished and robbed of a fundamental source of excitement. They don't want to come out of the closet, because the closet excites them.
