Washington Post reports Bush knew of the massacre since March 11.
On March 10, the (Haditha) findings were given to Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Gen. Peter Pace, the first Marine ever to be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Rumsfeld told aides that the case promised to be a major problem. He called it "really, really bad -- as bad or worse than Abu Ghraib," recalled one Pentagon official. On March 11, President Bush was informed, according to the White House.
Rep. Murtha broke the news in mid-May. UPDATE: As some below, including Smintheus and Clem Yeobright have pointed out, the diary is inaccurate in that it is possible that both the facts in the AP article and the WAPO article are reconcilable, ie, the reporter contact described in the WAPO article may have come on March 10, when the WAPO says Bush learned of the massacre. I apologize for the error. When I read the WAPO article, it contradicted what I remembered to be the case, so I hastily did a Google search to support my recollection. My error. I have gutted the original diary -- now that I apparently have been allowed back in to edit it -- but I won't delete the diary. It has evolved into a discussion of the habitual, criminal lying of the Bush Administration and any attempts to shine light on that is a good thing. So unrecommend if you wish or comment away. Finally, doesn't it strike anyone but me as extraordinary that Bush had to be told about this by Time Magazine?
