Prediction -- Iran Nuclear Test pre-2006 election

Wed Aug 23, 2006 at 09:12:32 PM PDT

I just want to capture my thoughts, knowing full well I could be very wrong, but my gut is telling me that the one thing this White House (Cheney and his puppet) wants most of all is precisely what they keep telling us they don't want:  an Iranian nuclear test.

Sorry if this offends your sensibilities.  I'm not trying to troll.  Please don't read the rest if all you have to add is "omg CT diary omg!"

Facts:

1.  Democratic control of the House will make things far too difficult for Cheney/Bush.  Far, far, far too difficult.

2.  An Iranian nuclear test would appear to validate the current GOP talking point that "intelligence reports on Iran are too optimistic!", pointing the accusatory finger back at the agencies that, ultimately, Bush has been responsible for over 5 years.  (They do love to point the finger at some other limb of themselves when they can't blame Clinton).

3.  The level of paranoia and fear such a test would generate in the U.S. (and elsewhere) would be highly supportive of the entire Cheney/Bush policy strategy:  power grabs through fear.

4.  Iran just needs highly enriched material; they apparently got all the info they needed for a basic device from Pakistan's Khan.  (How many nuclear warheads have been decomissioned over the last 20 years?  How secure is all that material?  What about the NK/Iran possibilities?)

5.  Bush Sr. has worked with Iran (hell, anyone really) when it filled his interests; his son and his co-consipirators would likely do the same.  (e.g.  Iran Contra, Iran Hostage Crisis resolution)

Ask yourself this:  would Cheney/Bush want Iran to have the material for maybe a couple of nukes, just to justify a test, and hence secure the outrage necessary to disrupt the Fall elections, make oil prices go crazy, and possibly "justify" an enlarged middle east crisis?

Crazy?  Maybe.  But I wouldn't put anything past them if it serves their interests.  Again, I'm just speculating; but I am considering the principle that when Bush tells you, "It's raining outside!", you'd probably be best putting sunscreen on.
