WASHINGTON, March 10 -- The Senate dealt a surprising election-year rebuke on Wednesday to the White House goal of new tax cuts as it narrowly backed a new rule to require at least 60 votes to approve any tax cuts in the next five years.
Four Republican senators -- Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, John McCain of Arizona and Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, both of Maine -- joined Democrats in the 51-to-48 vote.
This will make it more difficult to fulfill Bush's demand to make his tax cuts permanent.
This really shows you something about how worried some Republicans are about the finances of this country. They are so concerned that they would vote to give their Democrat opponents an advantage, in effect giving the Democrats a filibuster on all tax cuts for the next five years. Huge.
It also represents yet another step away from the policies of Bush. There's been a decided turn away from Bush and his failed policies these past few months, and this is another step in the right direction.
