Man arrested for knife in "sterile area" of Detroit airport

Quoth the AP:
Mohammed Ghanem, 21, of Hamtramck, Mich., was jailed yesterday after being arraigned on a charge of possessing a weapon in the sterile area of an airport.
"In the sterile area"?
"In the sterile area", the report says. That means the part of the airport beyond the checkpoint. If this is true, some screeners need to meet with a cluestick. And if it's not, the AP needs to be more precise with its reporting.
Was this knife found at the checkpoint? Even before That Day In September, it should have been caught. If not, by just what measures did they find that knife? Did they profile him? (He had a one-way ticket to Yemen.) Maybe some TSA guy thought he was acting rather nervous. Or maybe he dropped the book in which the knife was hidden and the knife fell out.
We just don't know, and that's what rankles. This could well be a hijacking that didn't happen, and the AP doesn't see fit to report it properly.
