old friend gone bad

Sun Sep 10, 2006 at 10:01:08 PM PDT

Ever reconnect with an old friend and realize all that time you were out of touch you'd become reeeally different?  Here's what I got tonight from someone I knew 20 years ago and have recently begun e-mailing:

I've cut up the letter to the editor--don't want to screw with copyright--but it's just shit; you'll get the idea.  But my reply at the end isn't bad.  I think my old friend and I will be crossing each other off our Christmas-card lists:

Sounds about right?????
Subject: : Breaking into your house - in English
A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages!! It explains things better than all the balderdash you hear on TV.)

"Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country... addressing the issue of illegal immigration. Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house.

According to the protesters, not only must you let me stay, you  must add me to your family's insurance plan and provide other benefits to me  and to my family...
It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, And I'm just trying to better myself.

And what a deal it is for me!! I live in your house, contributing only A fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do  about it without being accused of selfishness, prejudice and being anti-housebreaker...

Oh yeah, and I want you to learn my language so you can communicate with me....

No, but this sounds about right:

Let's say you're a Mexican living in the western part of what will  become the United States and the white people living on the east  coast of the continent decide to take your land.  First they move  in a whole lot of settlers whom you accommodate until you notice  the whites outnumber the natives.  Then it's too late.

Or this sounds about right:

Let's say your country allows huge corporations from the country to your north to build enormous manufacturing plants just inside your borders so they can avoid  following labor laws and paying taxes in their own country, to the  detriment of workers on both sides of the border.

Or this:

Let's say even though it smashes your family and your life and your health, you risk everything to go north where you can make enough  money for you and your family to live on the earth, but just  barely, and though it is illegal to employ you, the companies who  hire you never pay a price for exploiting your desperation.

And this:

Let's say in about 20 years most people in the U.S. speak a language other than English and we isolated mono-lingual Americans,  except for those with a pipeline into the U.S. treasury during the  Middle East wars who are now rich enough to insulate themselves  from the massive new poor, violent, desperate underclass they  created, are the minority and that those who are multi-lingual vote not to  print ballots in English

That sounds about right.
