"Mission Accomplished" in Iraq; Now Withdraw

Thu Jan 25, 2007 at 01:50:40 PM PDT

The key reasons for the declaration of war on Iraq (the dismantling of Iraq's WMD program, deposing Saddam, and liberating the Iraqi people) have been realized.  With our mission in Iraq such a glorious success, it's time to withdraw on a high note, as the "birth pangs of freedom" consume the country.

Dismantling Iraq's WMD program: well, we have accomplished this goal.  Sure, some critics might say that this objective has been attained for approximately 15 years, but that's just nit-picking the details.  As they say, it's better late than never.  Who cares if a decades-old grievance has been rendered irrelevant?  Certainly not the administration.  And, anyway, we no longer have to fear that Saddam will wake up one morning, decide that he would like to see his country bombed into oblivion, and launch a nuke at the US to effect this.  We can go to sleep at night knowing that the evil Iraqis won't jump into their ships, cross the Atlantic, and wreak havoc in New York.  I'm sure FOX News obtained a "secret" document showing the madman Saddam's plans for an invasion of the US, just like Guatemala had in Reagan's time.

Deposing Saddam: you can put another check mark here.  Not only have we deposed Saddam, but we have subjected him to a mockery of a trial; even his defense attorneys were afraid for their lives.  We sentenced him to death because of the murders of under 200 civilians while other world leaders whose actions resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of individuals remain unpunished.  And, as for the cherry on top, we tortured him prior to hanging him to show that the new regime installed in Iraq would surely be better than the old one.  Indeed, the new power structure in Iraq summarily executes those of a different religious sect -- that's certainly an improvement over Saddam.  He could never even dream of killing as many people as have now died.

Liberating the Iraqi people: we have the best track record on this one.  In fact, the nominal government we have installed in Iraq is powerless to do anything.  Iraqis have freedom as they have never had it before; they have a broad array of rights including the right to kill others with impunity.  Nothing can restrain the freedom of the Iraqis -- not even American troops.  The only freedoms they don't have are those to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but those just minutiae.  Iraqis are taking Patrick Henry's words to heart: "Give me liberty or give me death."  However, instead of just settling for either liberty or death, they're getting both together -- what a bargain!

Since we have had such astounding success in those above areas, it seems that it's now high time to withdraw.
