dKos username search available (w/poll)

Wed Jan 31, 2007 at 01:34:08 PM PDT

In processing historical tag data I've found the need for a quick username to uid map, so I've put together a little program that once every hour grabs new usernames from the user pages and saves them with their respective uid, website, and email info. I've put a username search form on meta.dkosopedia.com which returns username, uid, and website.

  1. About 117,000 users are registered at dKos, and I since didn't want everyone to search on the letter "a" and choke the intertubes with all 73,401 matches, it's set so that a minimum of 3 characters are needed for a valid search. There are only 394 two-character usernames, and if there's a hue and cry I'll make a page specifically for them (and the 25 one-character usernames).
  1. I'm not including email addresses on the results page. If anyone remembers, a couple of years ago someone went through the user pages and harvested email addresses, and sent out a mass mailing for something I can't remember now. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth at this "spammer," and though it turns out he was guilty of no more than poor judgement, it set a precedent. I won't publish the email addresses I got from the user pages. Note, though, that a) anyone could grab them as I did, and b) these are the public email addresses published on the user pages, not the "real" ones guarded by fembots in the secret dKos lair.
  1. It's possible to search by range of uids, so if, for example, you're uid 3406 and want to see who registered just before and after you, you can search the range 3396 to 3416. Why you'd want to do that, I don't know (especially since if you're uid 3406 you have better ways to find that out). I commented this functionality out, mainly because at that point I still had the email addresses in the results, and it seemed too easy to harvest them with a range search. I may add this back in when I get a chance.
  1. Given items 2 and 3 above, I am still interested in seeing how many of you do and do not want to see email addresses, hence the following poll. Just for reference, of the 117000 or so users, about 10400 include a website, and about 16700 include an email address.
