Evening all. I was a busy boy today so I'm a little late posting Cheers and Jeers. But, like a fine wine, it only gets better---nay, more succulent---with time.
Be sure to vote in the poll also. Yesterday over 50% of you thought that "The Empire Strikes Back" is the best of the original Star Wars films. And you would be right. I saw that about 30 times during the summer of '80, and I got in deep doo-doo with my parents for coming home late for dinner on many occasions. Screw 'em. It was worth it. Mark Hamill in that tank top...agagghghghghghghgh. If anyone's responsible for flicking my gay switch to 'on,' it's him. Or...maybe it was Yoda.
Enjoy today's column in the Extended copy section...

Cheers and Jeers for Thursday, February 12, 2004
CHEERS to Phyllis Lyon, 79, and Del Martin, 83. After 51 years together, they become first gay couple to be married in America, tying the knot at San Francisco city hall. I'm thrilled for them. But I upped my flood insurance just in case.
CHEERS to the Founding Fathers. They knew they couldn't trust politicians, so they stacked the deck against constitutional amendments. Cheers also to attorney Ronald Goldfarb for this astute op-ed piece: http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2004-02-11-goldfarb_x.htm
JEERS to science gone horribly wrong. South Koreans just cloned an embryo. Buried in the report: "Our gratitude goes out to Carrot Top for his valuable donation."
CHEERS to latest AWOL development. Two former `Bama guardsmen say they were expecting to drill with Dubya, but he never showed up. Behold the juicy bits: http://www.memphisflyer.com/content.asp?ID=2834&onthefly=1
JEERS to Osama's Navy. Scotland Yard reports terror mastermind has flotilla of 15 ships for global mischief. And Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway haven't been seen for weeks.
CHEERS to Drudge. Breaks Kerry/Intern scandal that will lead to disgrace and resignation, followed by Dean ascension to White House. Hey...a fella can dream, can't he?
JEERS to Bob Novak. Ol' Fish Lips (apologies to real fish for the comparison) spilled the beans about CIA agent Valerie Plame despite plea from govt. officials not to, says American Prospect article: http://www.prospect.org/print-friendly/webfeatures/2004/02/waas-m-02-12.html . Finally, a reason to live again: seeing this guy twist in the wind.
JEERS to the recovery. First-time jobless claims--363,000 last week--were 18,000 higher than expected. On the upside, just think of all those pesky household chores you can get done now.
CHEERS to Abraham Lincoln. Born 195 years ago in Kentucky. One of the unforgettable moments of my life: visiting his tomb in November, 1992. No one else around...just Abe and Me and silence and awe. This Bud's for you, dude.
CHEERS to fond memories. Ahhh...them's was the days: http://www.bushflash.com/thanks
What were you cheering and jeering about today?
