I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the readers of LGF have NO clue that their leader, Charles, used to refer to Bush as "Shrub", among many other names. He had a lot of contempt for the man, as a matter of fact. The following are postings (in chronological order) of his remarks about Bush prior to 9/11. The stark contrast between then and now is amazing.
2/20/01 - Links to a flash animation (link dead now) that was apparently so harsh that Bush fans would be "offended, guaranteed"
2/27/01 - Chastises Bush Sr. for his presidential pardons (not Jr., but shows disdain for a major Republican)
4/3/01 - Posts a link to a picture on his site (now removed) entitled "this is what can happen if you monkey with your bush." (Could it really be anything else?)
4/7/2001 - Links to www.bushorchimp.com (now dead)
4/16/2001 - We see the beginning of Charles' problems with Muslims (joking, but hey it could be)
4/27/01 - posts a link (now dead) to an article about how the founding fathers could have never envisioned media controlled by a few corporations and obviously has a problem with media consolidation - yet now supports Bush who loves it
5/3/01 - Refers to Bush as "Shrub" and a so-called "pissing contest" he's having with the Chinese
5/18/01 - Refers to Bush as "Shrub" again and puts quotation marks around Bush's "energy policy"
5/31/01 - Refers to Bush twins as "dumb" for trying to purchase alcohol (link is dead, but does contain headline of defunct article) - refers to them as "chips off the old block"
6/9/01 - Titles post "Hail to the hypocrite" and links to a Salon.com article about Bush's double standards for zero tolerance policies
6/18/01 - Links to the "13 scaries white guys" and remarks "guess who tops the list?" - posted by Michael Johnson, West Coast Editor of LGF
6/19/01 - links to an article on Salon.com regarding harsh drug law sentences and seems genuinely concerned with the issue - this is in direct opposition to Bush's tough stance
6/20/01 - links to an article about a Bin Laden plan to assassinate Bush, refers to Bush as a "figurehead" - posted by Michael Johnson, West Coast editor of LGF
6/26/01 - posts yet another article about media consolidation and his views against it
7/14/04 - Refers to Dan Quayle as "One of our funniest comedians (a true national treasure)"
7/14/04 - Refers to the "Wisdom of Dan Quayle" (presumably sarcastically) when linking to a collection of Quayle's stupid quotes (how funny that Quayle and Dubya are so alike)
7/21/01 - Refers to ICR.com (Institute of Creation Research) as "the motherlode of ignorance" - a stark contrast to Bush's beliefs
7/23/01 - refers to a Creationist who created a new version of The Monkees theme song as a "pin-head troglodyte" - again, in stark contrast to Bush's beliefs
7/24/01 - refers to Bush as "Duh!bya" and sarcastically states that he's glad Bush is "consulting one of the world's foremost authorities on cutting-edge science about stem cell research" with regard to his visit with Pope John Paul II
8/8/01 - Links to an article called "Bush's Texas-Sized Vacation" (now dead), titles post "must be nice to have no worries", says Yeehoo! the Shrub yeehooed softly, this presidentiality gig shore is relaxin'!
Bush's Texas-Sized Summer Vacation - from AlterNet, although original link on LGF was from IHT.com
8/11/01 - Links to a "This Modern World" strip (notorious left-wing stuff) that is, in actuality, a satirical litmus test of being a left-wing wacko (Charles appears to agree with the insinuation of the cartoon that the qualities or beliefs listed in the strip are good)
8/12/01 - Refers to Creationists as "far-right wackos" in a post titled "evolution: don't knock it if you haven't tried it"
8/22/01 - Posts a thread called "dog days for god", containing an article about how politicians use God and references the stem cell debate (Charles seems to think it's a good article)
8/25/01 - Refers to the "broad streak of anti-intellectual religion-based intolerance" in American politics, bashes Republican governor for homophobic and sexist remarks
8/30/01 - Posts a link to a Salon.com article entitled "The failure of zero tolerance"
9/2/01 - In a post called "Insanity", Charles refers to Bush as "Shrub" and talks about his "corporate puppetmasters"
9/11/01 - Charles' first reactions to the horrors of 9/11
I think it's fair to say that Charles, before 9/11, was not a big fan of Bush and leaned towards being a liberal. Most likely he was/is a Libertarian.
How did he go from that attitude to one of blind devotion for a man who stands for everything he seems to be against?
