Top Comments: Technically Challenged Friday
Fri Nov 02, 2007 at 07:20:03 PM PDT
Today's diary was supposed to be different. However, my computer decided that it has been an unsung hero for too long, and it stepped up this morning and asserted its need for recognition. In so doing, I became aware of exactly how long it had been since I'd backed it up. (I'll give the embarrassing details after the jump.)
As always, please submit those comments you feel deserve a wider audience to TopComments at gmail dot com. Please include your user name to insure proper credit. Because after a day like today, I might just credit myself! (Okay, not really, because doing so WOULD cause me to lose sleep, and there are few things in life I like more than sleep!)
More high tech follies and tonight's Top Comments after the jump!
So, this morning started out like every other. Coffee, feeding the pets, rousing the child, checking the email......
Until my computer started making sounds like it wanted to eat itself.
It is most likely a cooling fan going bad, but regardless, NOT a sound I want to hear, EVER. Especially not if it's been well, never, since I last backed up this computer.
I was really good about running regular backups with my old computer, but ran into problems with my external hard drive when I upgraded. It's one of those things I always meant to get back to.... well, you know the story.
So, this morning, after my 'puter does its garbage disposal imitation, I went running for that old, neglected external hard drive. I figured that in the time elapsed, new drivers MUST have been downloaded. Long story short, it doesn't like this particular version of my operating system, and in response, the manufacturer came up with a new hard drive rather than new drivers.
My apparently palpable frustration level sent the pets scurrying for quieter ground. A quick perusal of the internet (on asimbagirlette's computer) provided me with the best local buy of an external hard drive. (Did you know you can get half a terabyte of storage for $125????)
Sadly, my problems weren't over then. I found out the hard way that reformatting the new drive was a necessity if my backup was larger than 4 GB. (It was. Significantly.) Mr. Asimbagirl followed the pets lead at this point. I reformatted the drive. (I would LOVE to know why FAT 32 is the format of choice! And why this isn't called out SOMEWHERE in the accompanying documentation.)
I overcame the backup issues, the fan seems to have quieted down. Catastrophe averted!
Then, the router died.
I hate technology today.
Without further ado, here are tonight's top comments!

Comment:
Hah! You just reminded me of the time I told a Korean woman I was going to grad school to specialize in U.S. history. She said seriously, "Is there enough of it?"
From sardonyx:
Jacob Freeze has a good one-liner here, even though it takes two lines.

Here's the parent.
From this wretched excuse of a diary.
This was one of the most elegant and succinct takedowns of a Libertarian
position using his/her own skewed analogy and framing.
4Freedom gives us this submission:
NegSpin had this great comment to one of the endless Hillary slams.

My picks: (which are sparse. My router would apologize, but it is now in pieces)
Sycamore offers up this visual indictment of Bush's performance in office. It's from buhdydharma's recommended diary. (and honestly, y'all should just go do a search on Sycamore - this kossack is a treasure trove of GREAT photos!!!)
From the same diary, this comment from Victory Coffee starts of some really funny stuff....
From rserven's diary, Gabriele Droz gives us this definition of love. It so reminds me of the philosophy that is the foundation of my marriage that it rescued my day.
Along that same vein, I offer up this comment from Eddie C, from his Got A Happy Story Diary, just because.
and, here's one from Got a Grip from new kossack, (THE) Jim Hightower's diary that just says it all about where our country's going.
