If you've followed at all the
open seat created by Rep. Rob Portman's (R-OH) retirement from Congress to become U.S. Trade Representative, you probably think that the Ohio 2nd is not a district that is winnable by Democrats, because of the Republicans' 3 to 1 advantage in voter registration. While it's an uphill battle, I think that money and support from our community could turn this district into a horse race, and even win on August 2. Here's why:
1. Money, money, money. This online community has a lot of it, and if we can consolidate behind a candidate early and fund his or her challenge, then we can take the Republicans by surprise. Sad but true: enough money can win any seat, even in the unlikeliest of circumstances. We can provide that, I believe. And we also know the first maxim of money in politics: "Early money is like yeast: it makes the dough rise."
2. Tom DeLay, Terri Schiavo, Social Security, George Bush. The Republicans are having some rough news cycles these days. Mention Tom DeLay in every ad, bumper sticker, and yard sign attacking the Republican. "Is this the kind of leadership you want in your Congress?" Imagine how much worse the Republican narrative would get, too, if we beat them on "safe" territory.
3. A strong candidate. I suggest that we unify behind Paul Hackett III, an Iraq war veteran and attorney from Indian Hills. I don't know much about him, though, and would love to hear others suggest better candidates.
The DCCC is unlikely to put resources into this race, so just imagine what kind of national news story it would be if it was won on blog power, with blog money. Big big big. No better way to lead in to the 2006 midterms. Also, great way to reenergize the Ohio Democratic Party for the governor and Senate races in that state. I say we do it.
