A trial balloon has been released unintentionally or otherwise by the
NY Times today on the issue of Gay Marriage. All of the Democrat
candidates support gay marriage or civil unions which means the nominee will be attacked regardless of who the nominee will be.
Several fascinating questions come to mind.
Which of the candidates actually has experience winning an election while being attacked by the GOP for supporting Gay Marriage or Civil Unions?
Also does this mean Dick Cheney will be booted from the ticket, since his official position on this subject is different that Dubya's?
Will Cheney's gay daughter come out against the GOP? Newt Gingrich's daughter?
Will Lynn Cheney finally come to grips with her daughter's life style and love her anyway?
Will the Democrats be savvy enough to exploit these divisions despite being told that Cheney's daughter is off limits?
Will the Democrats point out that we don't divide people by their sexual orientation; that we don't consider a person to be evil based upon their orientation; that we are not attacking Cheney's daughter for being gay, but Bush is.
Bush is, because he is setting her apart from the rest of us. That Bush would deny her inheritance rights, visitation rights, and of course, most important, partnership rights, including the division of assets upon the ending of the partnership. It is true that more than a few lawyers currently make a living devising ways to remove this blocks, but that only heightens the inequality.
Is marriage only for procreation? If so what about all the childless couples (including me and my spouse). Couples who marry past child bearing age?
Democrats are going to get hit hard with this issue, we better start figuring out how to fight back- now
