I want to conduct a poll among strong environmentalists concerning nuclear power. I'd appreciate it if only those of you who are ideologically aligned with the Green Party on most issues would reply, as this poll is part of some critical thinking I am trying to do concerning the Green Party. I understand this is a Democratic-focused site and so, in token, I offer the results as informative for Democrats of a coalition member.
QUESTION: Do you support the decommissioning of existing nuclear plants, as has been planned for Western Europe?
The issue is complicated by global warming, as it is likely renewable energy cannot make up the shortfall and thus decommissioning would increase consumption of fossil fuels and thus increase CO2 emissions.
My take: I do not support decommissioning at present, as the environmental damage fossil fuels cause exceeds the damage from radioactive waste, in my current estimation. Going further, I would be inclined to support new nuclear generation if the costs are reasonable and if the government assumes a larger role in the facilities. I consider myself very Green, but very scientific. I know many Greens will scoff at this.
