Choose Texas's "Mt. Rushmore" - FREEP THIS POLL! (updated)

Tue Dec 18, 2007 at 06:01:32 AM PDT

A new development is being planned in my area (about five miles from my home), just south of Houston, TX, called the Waterlights District, which will feature the Presidential Park and Gardens.

The Presidential Park and Gardens will center around twenty-foot high statues of the heads of all the U.S. Presidents, sculpted by world-famous artist David Adickes.  Rumor has it that some presidents deemed "more important" will be slightly larger than the rest (but we don't know who gets to do the deeming).    There will be a canal running through the whole thing, so that the statues can be enjoyed from boats.

Of course, the marketing can't feature ALL the presidents, can it?

I received notice today (from a friend who is consulting on the project, which MAY eventually include light rail from Houston!) that the developers have instituted a poll, so that citizens (both residents and those who may visit someday) can speak up about which FIVE presidents will be featured on the marketing blitz that is no doubt in our future.

The thing is, I don't want to be looking at Reagan or any Bush mug on billboards for the next 20 years, so I am asking you to PLEASE come freep this poll! (But be nice, of course!)   I know we have a lot of presidential scholars here, and I very much hope intelligent voices will prevail on this one.

Here is the poll:  Presidential Poll

I just voted:  Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, TR, FDR.  I'm sure there will be many other opinions here, but I imagine few of them will feature a Bush or Ronnie.

Vote early!  Vote often!  And when the thing is built, come by and say hi when you visit!

Here is some more information, from the developers' site:

WaterLights is a $600 million, 1.9 million square foot, next generation planned, urban development located only 15 minutes from the world's largest medical and research center and Downtown Houston. The development will feature residential condos, brownstones, luxury apartments, office buildings, retail boutiques, a fresh market, 10 restaurants, two luxury hotels, conference facility, a water wall and public park along a Grand Canal waterway. The entire community is pedestrian-friendly featuring walkable, environmentally friendly, sustainable, healthier, technologically advanced features to enhance quality of life. WaterLights District is a private-public partnership within the Spectrum Special Management District.

UPDATE:  After voting, I received an email with this nugget of information -

The statues of the five Presidents receiving the most votes will also be the first to be moved to the WaterLights District™ for the groundbreaking ceremony on President's Day, February 18, 2008.
