Latest Krugman Blog: Is He Losing it? Will He Crack?

Thu Dec 27, 2007 at 02:09:08 PM PDT

As most of us know, in recent weeks we have all noticed some rather erratic and disconcerting behaviour from our journalistic hero Paul Krugman.

Well, a blog entry yesterday shows that things are really slipping, logic-wise.

First a description of the condition: The issues he has chosen to support and focus on, health care mandates, and outside financing of political  campaigns, are important.  I mean as an uninsured middle-income person who might be financially affected by a lack of mandates, I could have some feelings, but our Paul is sadly obsessed with the issue.

However, I think all sane progressives would agree that the war is important, indeed more important than mandates.

In a his blog post yesterday, Krugman seems to be remembering this, as if trying to awake from a poison spell someone has cast upon him:

Here's the entry from http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/...

Back in 2003 all the Kewl Kids, as a lot of my friends call them, thought that to suggest that Bush was misleading us into war was, you know, shrill — it marked you as not being a Serious Person.

And here’s the thing: they still do. Even now, it’s better for your reputation not to have noticed until, say, 2005 that we had some dangerous people running the country. If you noticed earlier — or, worse yet, you caught on to the administration’s essential mendacity right from the beginning — it’s not a sign that maybe you had good judgment. It shows that you were an irrational Bush hater.

Krugman muses on these things, but it  seems the Kewl-Kid Kandidates who drank the Kewl-Aid still have him in their thrawl;

He just can't wake up and remember the name of the other shrill candidate from 2003.  What was his name?  Osama? Hussein? It all runs together.

I can hear the rambling in his fevered, confused brain now:

"There's that guy from Illinois who was shrill back then when we really needed it, but now he's talking cooperation and constructive compromise, just when all the Kewl Kid Kandidates are talking class struggle no-compromise diplomacy, just what we need now, right?  Rush Limbaugh, why are you here?... Ann Coulter stop that, stop that... ....aahhh.....!"

I don't know about you, but I'm worried for our erstwhile journalistic hero.  The mental force of his earnestly held convictions in 2003 and current policy-wonk obsession with mandates and unrestricted campaign funding seem to be forming irreconcialable tension, seriously constricting the mental processing in the pithidulipium [logic-organ].  There is a terrible build up of tension, and if it blows, the doctor says......

HE COULD HAVE A DRASTIC TURN FOR THE WORSE AND TURN INTO A RON PAUL SUPPORTER!

Please, everyone, do everthing you can do remind our hero of his former self, that despite his heroic championing of healthcare reform, there is a larger world beyond mandates, and that that shrill guy back then is still the same guy now.  The sooner he remembers this, comes out of his delirium and recognizes his electoral delusions as just that, the sooner we'll have him back to his old, progressive self again.
