This Atheist Enjoys Romney's Cult of Personality

As a former catholic who is now an atheist, I have been pretty outspoken about the fact that Mitt doesn't have a chance in hell (not that I believe in hell) in getting the Republican nomination. Why? Because he spent his life as a corporate raiding souless venture capitalist? Not at all. That is like being center fielder for the Yankees these days in America. Simply because he is a Mormon. It is very clear to an atheist that Mormons aren't one of the cool cults religions. When you are an atheist you get a good sense of which invisible superheroes in the sky are socially acceptable, and which are not.
If you go to a catholic mass you will see all sorts of strange ceremonies. They will talk about turning wine to blood and then want you to drink the blood. Try making a joke about that at a party. Doesn't go over well. People will look at you like you are the crazy one. But make fun of the Mormon's sacred undergarments and the "magic underwear" jokes fly fast and furious. Crack a joke about Muslims and if there are no Bush supporters in the room you will be called a racist. But Mormon jokes are fine. Scientology is still in that newish cult phase where most people still don't consider it a religion, but they still wish they were Tom Cruise or were sleeping with Tom Cruise. Scientology jokes are very acceptable although you may want to follow them up with a disclaimer that you really loved Rainman.
So, I was pretty shocked to hear NPR's coverage of Romney's talk today. They used the C-word. They came right out and said that many Evangelical Christians consider the Mormons to be a cult. And that Romney was trying to fight the image that his religion was a cult.
WOW. If I was an editor at NPR there is no way I would've let them use the word cult even though I believe all religions are just cults.
Hey Mitt, see if you can get a refund on that $60 million you spent because you are toast.
WOW. They called it a cult on NPR.
