Few things irk me more than the respective chairmen of the DNC and RNC. The position is one reserved for the most gratingly partisan of partisans. McAuliffe is particularly embarrassing. A big-money guy, he is politically tone-deaf, and adds nothing to our party.
This has made me question the nature of the chairmanship of the DNC. The chairman has become more of an attack dog of late. But it seems to me that we have plenty of those, many with the added benefit of not being a part of the Democratic Party, groups like MoveOn.org and America Coming Together.
I would like to see the chairmanship redefined, so that it becomes more of a chairman emeritus type of position, where an extremely respected elder statesman would be in charge, someone who could boost the credibility and respect of the party, and whose attacks would have real weight. Someone like a John Lewis (in a few years) a John Glenn or a Jimmy Carter. This, I believe, would be a much more constructive arrangement. What does everyone think?
