POLL: Would You Accept a Non-War-Related Impeachment?

Mon Mar 12, 2007 at 02:50:12 PM PDT

It strikes me that the current controversy over fired U.S. Attorneys is a scandal that is easier to understand and that it is blatantly more obvious that there is wrong-doing and not just stupidity at work here (and I don't think that the latter is grounds for impeachment).

My own position on impeachment is that I'd like to see it, but I think that it should only come when Congresional investigations are finished because I don't want a Saddam-esque show trial/lynching.  Plus, a part of me thinks it would be more entertaining to see Bush brought before an international war crimes tribunal after his term in office where he can do his best impression of Slobodan Milosovic after being extradited by a Democratic president.

Let's say that there exist grounds to impeach Bush over the U.S. Attorneys or over some non-Iraq-related scandal and that impeachment on these grounds might go faster.  I can see some people saying that impeachment needs to be over Iraq in order to fully repudiate the Bush war policy for the sake of history and that other grounds for impeachment may spare Dick Cheney, who will stay the failed miserable course if he moves into the Oval Office.  On the other hand, I can see some people wanting to throw the bum out as soon as possible.

This isn't to say that I think there are non-war-related grounds for impeachment currently out there, but I think it is an avenue worth exploring.
