Climate Change Datasets hard to get!    With poll

Thu Apr 05, 2007 at 01:29:57 AM PDT

I am currently taking an ARC GIS class that requires I do a project of my choice.  GIS is a computer generated mapping software that is incredibly powerful, and allows you to create interactive maps that you can actually query!  I wanted to do a project that would allow spatial analysis of climate change, hunger, and conflict.  Guess what!!  Almost every government site that used to offer climate change data as a free download is no longer available.  Conflict data is also hard to come by.  The first couple of sites were just an irritation. Then I started getting creeped out.  Just last week Bu$hco put a new muzzle on climate scientists, and now I can't get climate data?  Oy!  Then I told myself, "I'm new at this right?  I must just not be looking in the right places."

No such luck. Two days of hunting and I'm still coming up short.  When in doubt, (and before I put on my tinfoil hat!)ask a Kossak!  Ok, I'm asking?  Where do I get datasets that can be used in ArcMap that pertain to global climate change and global conflict.  Any datasets on global shortages of basic resources, oil reserves, energy consumption, and socio-political unrest would also be useful.  I much appreciate any help you might offer!  Thanks!  I have some data on hunger, global temperature, drought etc. but nothing more recent than 2003.  I really want this project to be a useful tool folks can use to get a clear spatial picture of how these things relate to one another.  The only way to do that is by finding good, recent data. I would like to add as an aside that if you find climate change datasets, it might behoove you to grab them just in case.  OK I admit it!  I really look good in tinfoil.  It bothers me that there should be such a dearth of information openly available when the topic is so important and so current.

Is the data being supressed or am I just not looking in the right places?
