Before we get all excited about the Kos straw poll....it's important to remember that this is a straw poll of the latte-wing Deaniac blogosphere, which as a recent Pew study proved, is very different (i.e. white, male, middle-aged, college-educated rich people) from the whole of the Democratic Party. Straw polls are usually conducted at state party conferences, or summer events like state fairs, where the proportion of voters who are also bloggers is probably less than 1%, and where the pickup trucks in the parking lot outnumber the Volvos 10 to 1. But of course, whatever the result, no doubt Kos will trumpet it as the true desires of the whole party, which should be taken with the appropriate grain of salt.
Second, how do you explain Wesley Clark leading? After Dean, Clark was the next blogosphere darling in 2004, so the natural Dean support that still exists in the Kos blogosphere does have a place to go. And of course, there's the post 9/11 miltary thing.
Which is just as ridiculous now as it was then. Call me crazy, but the last time we tried the "we need a military guy so we don't look like pussies" thing worked out pretty poorly. Voters aren't stupid. Following a four star general, lattes in hand, Noam Chomsky in their backpacks, in their Volvos, doesn't solve the blogging left's underlying problem. It's gonna take more than just nominating a general for the ticket to solve our pussy problem.
