I've never gone to Columbia, and I am both a Jew and a Zionist.
However, I am of two minds about allegations of abusive behavior towards students at Columbia University's Middle East Studies Department shown in the documentary "Columbia Unbecoming".
I think that they are probably true, and I DO NOT believe that they signify a problem particular to the Middle East Studies Department at Columbia.
I believe they indicate of a problem with the culture of the WHOLE UNIVERSITY.
I come to this conclusion from other stories that I have heard regarding the Columbia Physics Department.
When my brother was looking at PhD programs in physics, he examined the major programs, and when he was warned not to go to Columbia.
The faculty is well respected. The department is well funded. But the department is notorious for abuse, as in "I know that your thesis is done, but I need you to finish your lab work for me over the next three years".
They have recruiting problems because of this.
Every university is an asylum run by the inmates (faculty), but Columbia has a worse problem than most institutions of higher learning.
